Dissecting our latest ProductHunt launch
Oh boy.
Where do we start with this oneâŚ
Two weeks ago, we launched our app for Zoom on ProductHunt đ
You may have received an email or four from us about it đ (thank you for your support!).
The original premise of ProductHunt was that you showed off your product to a community of like-minded people and got feedback on it. The community gave you an up-vote if they liked your product đ
That seems pretty cool, and noble.
The Dark Side of ProductHunt
Within hours of our product going live on ProductHunt, we were receiving emails and LinkedIn messages from people promising to help boost our votes in exchange for money.

One person even promised us 300+ votes to be delivered within hours.
Of course, all of this is against PHâs terms and policiesâbut itâs not something they can prevent from happening.
A couple of apps launched on the same day suddenly received hundreds of up-votes within a couple of hours.
This could be entirely legitimate votes, but it could have easily been that the apps paid some of the people who contacted us looking to sell hundreds of up-votes.
The feeling that we were left with at the end of the day was that products are not being recognized for their benefits, but the whole process is about who is prepared to pay shady characters for up-votes.
All in all, it left a pretty bitter taste in our mouths đ
No more chasing votes or âsupportâ
This has left us in a bit of a conundrum.
We love the original premise of ProductHunt: Getting constructive feedback from the community.
Indeed, we received dozens of comments from people giving their valuable opinions and thoughts on our product and we truly appreciated it.
Itâs a gold mine for knowing if weâre explaining the StreamAlive premise accurately, what features people find valuable, and what improvements we can make to make it more universally accepted.
We really enjoyed all the comments and getting the feedback.
We really disliked the âgameâ of hustling to get upvotes.
So weâve decided that weâre not going to give up on ProductHunt. Weâre going to continue doing launches for our upcoming native apps (similar to our app for Zoom, but for different platforms).
However, weâre not going to solicit any more âsupportâ and weâre not going to care about being the #1 product, or how many up-votes we get.
Instead, weâre going to use these launches to focus the team on creating the necessary product collateralâhaving a launch day deadline really makes you focus on whatâs important!
Weâre also going to do it for the comments and feedback from the ProductHunt community which we believe is far more valuable than an up-vote.
