🧵Marketing without a budget
I’m sure many of you reading this are in the same position as StreamAlive: You need to generate awareness about your business to get new customers or users, but you don’t have the budget to spend on everything and anything.
So how are we supposed to compete against our competitors who seem to have unlimited budgets?
Well…
75% of StreamAlive’s new users are from free sources
We don’t pay for most of our signups, they come to us via the following places:
SEO
Marketplaces
Word of mouth (direct traffic to the website)
Wait, hasn’t AI killed SEO?
The takeaway is that SEO isn’t dead, despite many claiming that AI will kill Google and other search engines.
Over time, AI will decrease the search engine clicks for informational keywords, such as “what is a livestream?” and “who are the most popular livestreamers?”
However, there are plenty of people searching for “zoom polls” or “online spinner wheels” which are all keywords relevant to StreamAlive and can’t be answered by AI.
We’ve focused our SEO efforts on transactional keywords, which are lower in search volume but have a higher level of intent.
That said…
We have also created pages for informational keywords which are at risk of being made redundant by AI because the AI overlords haven’t ruined everything just yet.
The key to going after informational keywords is to use programmatic SEO (or pSEO) to quickly generate lots of pages relevant to each keyword so you don’t spend too much time or effort on something that might not have a long-term future.
In our case, we have used pSEO to generate pages related to icebreakers, since so many people search for different types of icebreakers to use. It’s relevant to StreamAlive as our audience interactions can be used to break the ice in meetings and other live sessions.
682% increase in search engine traffic
The chart below shows how our organic search traffic has increased week-on-week as we continue focusing on transactional keywords and generating informational pages using pSEO.
Leverage the audience of others
A large chunk of our users come from the Zoom ecosystem (see pie chart above). We created the StreamAlive app for Zoom and listed it in the Zoom marketplace.
From there, Zoom’s millions of users can discover StreamAlive and sign up for an account.
But we don’t just list the app and leave it at that.
Every month we review the content on the marketplace listing and see if we can tweak the headlines, screenshots and descriptions to encourage more Zoom users to install the app.
We also review the app UI and content to see how that can be tweaked to increase the conversion rate of guest users to registered users.
The result of these iterations is a 237% increase in users signing up from our first month to last month - just by improving the copy and UI.
(Again, sorry, but I’m not allowed to share actual numbers here, but you can see the upward trend)
Once bitten, twice shy
That’s not to say everything has been good and rosy.
Next week, we’re going to talk about what hasn’t worked for us in our marketing, including uncovering some shady tactics by third parties to inflate their advertising metrics.
No Money Marketing
The reason I’m telling you all this is to show you that even though we’re doing well at bringing in users for free, we’re still in our infancy when it comes to “pull” marketing.
So we’ve asked the author of Marketing Without Money and No Money Marketing to come and help us.
Jessie Paul has been teaching businesses large and small, and her community about pull marketing for the last 20 years.
She shows them how to stretch marketing budgets and avoid costly advertising campaigns altogether.
Jessie has built a repeatable framework and strategy that any business can use to make themselves heard in a crowded market place.
And she’s going to teach it to you (and us) absolutely free next week.
